According to the research, in 2017, 177 public deals were made on the business angel investment market, while the top-22 business angels accounted for 65% — 116 deals. In total, Russian business angels made 11 exits, five of which were made by representatives of the top-22. The average check of transactions ranged from one million roubles up to one million US dollars. In terms of the sectoral structure, the most investment-attractive areas were financial technologies, e-commerce, medicine, fashion and VR / AR.
The rating includes professional investors who regularly make transactions and for whom venture capital investment is the main business and work. In addition, at least two transactions of a business angel over a year should be confirmed by public information.
In the selection of the most active business angels in this period, Alexander Rumyantsev, who completed 28 transactions for the year, took first place, as in the previous year. Roman Povolotsky invested in six projects and took second place. Igor Rybakov took the third place in the ranking with his five confirmed transactions.
In 2017, the activity on the market of business angel investing by known IT entrepreneurs increased. So, the co-founder and ex-shareholder of Morton Group Alexander Ruchyev has invested in three projects (Awerspace, Smart Valley, ICO Lab Ecosystem), co-founder of QIWI Sergey Solomin, according to the research, LP acts in several funds at once and is an active private investor (2017 — Theories and Practices, Consortium of British Higher School of Design).
This year, many participants of the rating have reached it for the first time ever. In particular, Miroslava Duma, which this year launched the venture fund Fashion Tech Lab (FTL) and invested in two projects in the fashion industry (Orange Fiber, Diamond Foundry), Managing Partner of the Armor Capital Management investment fund Boris Zhilin, who invested in projects Meet For Charity and Elementaree.
Entrepreneurs investing in their companies, stock investors, multimillionaires, patrons and people who support the projects based on their altruistic beliefs did not participate in the ranking.
