The Demo Day of BiotechMed track in GenerationS Federal Competition organized by Russian Venture Company and Moscow Innovation Development Center was held in Tomsk on September 23. The selection of ten projects that will attend a coaching session and meeting with Russian and international investors in Moscow was the last event in BiotechMed track, which is operated by Tomsk State University. The events were held since May and included regional Road show by BiotechMed experts and applications collection, independent examination of the announced projects, a comprehensive pre-acceleration program, expert selection of the projects for accelerator, 17-day acceleration program and Demo Day - selection of finalists, whose fate will be decided in Moscow.
Demo Day was held at the platform of "Pharmaceuticals and medical devices" International Forum. The GenerationS participants in BiotechMed presented their projects to experts and investors from RVC Seed Fund, Skolkovo Fund, R&D Capital, Starta Capital, i-Accelerator, Kama Investment Management, Bioprocess Capital Partners and others.
"Demo Day is the final point of educational program of BiotechMed track, but at the same it is the starting one: now the start-ups will have to find their own place in the competitive high-tech business, - said Olga Babkina, Deputy Vice Rector for Science of Tomsk State University. - During these two weeks not only finalist start-ups passed "through the mill", but the organizers, the project mentors, as well. The acceleration program implemented by Tomsk State University together with its partner - Russian Venture Company - revealed new possibilities in the preparation of high-tech projects, which is especially valuable for biotechnology and medicine. We are looking forward to the final results of GenerationS in Moscow."
Following the Demo Day results, ten best projects were selected by the qualified jury:
• Ophthalmic ion-exchangeable healing lenses for treatment of injuries, burns and contagious eye lesions" (Kemerovo),
• "HepyScreen, a helicobacteriosis screener" (St.Petersburg),
• Quantum Cure, a complex electro-chemotherapy device designed for a tumor targeting delivery of toxic highly-concentrated chemotherapeutic agents (Moscow),
• "Biodegradable polymers and conjoint polymers on the basis of glycolic acid" (Tomsk),
• "Tracheobronchial nebuliser with a respiratory tube and children mask" (Moscow),
• "Gene toolbox", production of specialized enzymes for genetic research (Moscow),
• "Technology of high-protein feed additive production from poultry industry waste" (Kemerovo),
• "Tectum, a hemostatic agent" (Nizhny Novgorod),
• "Express-prosthesis" (Moscow),
• "Development of software and hardware complex for objective estimation of the neurosurgical treatment results" (Novosibirsk).
"For the Demo Day final, those projects were selected that attracted the investors' attention, which means that they are ready to consider making investments in these projects in the nearest time. - said Gulnara Bikkulova, Director of RVC Innovation Markets Department. - However, among those that were not selected for the top-10, there are projects that will soon become interesting to the investors. Now they need to work out business plans, attract partners, verify the business models."
The accelerator experts noted a high investment attractiveness of the projects presented on the Demo day of BiotechMed track. And many of them expressed the opinion that the accelerator turned out to be a vital stage of development for the most startups. So, Galina Makarova, Professor and Medical Consultant (USA), commented: "The aim of the BiotechMed accelerator was to select the best innovative ideas and to help the projects find flaws and weaknesses that must be corrected. Each project represents goods sold by the piece, it is important to pay attention to each of them - how to develop and position the project in order to create a commercial product to be launched in the market."
It is to be recalled that the developers of 40 projects from all over Russia, selected from 323 applications, took part in GenerationS BiotechMed acceleration program. The program was held as an intensive education with lectures and workshops from more than 80 Russian and international experts. The program included 8 meetings and video conferences with Russian and international investors, an integration with RVC projects - Talk2VC platform for communication between investors and entrepreneurs (in cooperation with RusBase), Acceleride Day platform for professional communication between partners and mentors supervising accelerators (in cooperation with RVCA) as well as International Forums Triple Helix.
Ten best projects of BiotechMed track will continue competing in GenerationS. Their representatives will attend a coaching session in Moscow and will present their projects to Russian and foreign investors in the final of GenerationS at "Open Innovations" Forum. The GenerationS will be awarded with a prize of 5 mln rubles.
