The finals of the school track of the Olympiad of the National Technological Initiative (NTI) have been completed in Moscow and Veliky Novgorod. 1053 people reached the final test, and 159 winners from 37 regions will receive 100 points in the Unified State Exam on one of the principle subjects upon admission to leading engineering universities.
Most of the winners come from St. Petersburg (37 people), the second place with a minimum margin is occupied by Novosibirsk (36 people), Moscow takes the third place (27 people). The winners also live in the Republic of Tatarstan, Krasnoyarsk and Primorsk Territories, Chelyabinsk, Novgorod and Irkutsk regions.
In the 2018/19 school year, the competitions were held within 19 technical profiles related to the development of “markets of the future” — unmanned vehicles, intellectual energy, small space, neuro- and biotechnologies, robotics and other advanced scientific fields. The directions correspond to the NTI’s industry priorities — the programs of Russia’s global technological leadership by 2035. Most of the finalists study in grade 11, but, apart from them, five 7th grade students have reached the final stage.
The tasks of the NTI Olympiad are as close to real life as possible. The finalists were involved in the genome editing task; development of a smart electrical network with an optimal production schedule; identification of a person to access financial transactions in the blockchain network; creating a brain-computer interface; development of a system that detects driver drowsiness and others. This year the final competition took place at several venues in 10 cities of Russia.
The Super Final of the Olympiad will be held as part of the educational intensive “Island 10-22” scheduled for July at the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology. All winning teams will be invited to the final without additional tests. Young scientists, engineers and entrepreneurs under the age of 20 are also invited to participate. The participants of the Circle Movement’s projects and the leaders of their own projects, the winners of the Duty on the Planet competitions, the All-Russian School Olympiad, the NTI-Umnik contests, the winners of all the NTI Olympiad tracks and others will be given priority at the selection stage.
The NTI Olympiad is a unique format of engineering competitions for schoolchildren of 7-11 grades aimed at identifying and developing talented children who are able to solve complex interdisciplinary tasks. The Circle movement of the NTI, RVC and ASI have held the Olympiad in partnership with the largest Russian universities and leading tech companies since 2015. In the 2018/2019 school year, more than 38 thousand schoolchildren from 85 regions of Russia applied for participation. Since 2018, a student track has been held as part of the Olympiad, and its winners will be offered a chance to complete free training in magistracies as well as undertake internships at leading engineering companies.
