The Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech) will create a market for equipment for high-speed 5G wireless networks, protected from external sanctions, the institute said in a statement.
Skoltech will develop a platform for creating 5G equipment with an open architecture (OpenRAN - Radio Access Network), which will allow operators to compete with solutions of foreign vendors.
Skoltech won the competitive selection for grants for state support of the leading research centres (LRCs) activity programs on the theme “Development of a unified digital platform solution providing effective design and deployment of radio access networks based on a new generation (5G) open communication standard harmonized with the international one".
The Institute will implement the project in collaboration with the Russian telecom equipment manufacturer Eltex, one of the largest exporters of domestic wireless solutions Radio Gigabit, as well as the Tomsk State University of Control Systems and Radio Electronics (TUSUR). The customer of this development is the Ministry of Communications of the Russian Federation. The operator for selecting LRCs as part of the national program "Digital Economy of the Russian Federation" is Russian Venture Company. A grant of 300 million roubles will be allocated for the implementation of the centre’s program.
Last December, Skoltech, MTS, and Element Group of Companies (Sistema and Rostech microelectronic JV) signed an agreement on cooperation in the development and production of equipment for 5G networks in Russia based on OpenRAN international open radio access standards.
