How GenerationS, the largest in Russia accelerator, is organized

Source: RusBase

On April 27, the final of the largest in Russia and Eastern Europe start-up accelerator GenerationS by RVC will be held in Moscow. It is held five years in raw. The biggest Russian and international companies participate in the program as partners. With their assistance, the accelerator selects the best start-ups in the key economy industries.

We will explain how the accelerator is organized, what the participants will get and what is the future of the winners in previous accelerators.

How the program passes.

The federal start-up accelerator GenerationS is held since 2013 year. Comparing to the previous years, this season became even more extensive.

3630 teams claimed to participate in the program

18 countries of the world were represented by the participating teams

100 projects passed through multi-level selection and now participate in the acceleration program

Receipt of applications to participate in GenerationS started about one year prior to final. Potential participants should apply in one of the industries - tracks. This season, 7 tracks are open.

Raising of agriculture efficiency, creation of new food, bio conversion, solutions in the field of new medicine, diagnostic systems.

Metals re-cycling, new technologies in metal exploration, remote and automated control of mining machinery, preparation and management of raw materials quality.

Development of personal sources and accumulators of energy, advanced solutions for extraction, transformation, transportation, distribution and consuming of the power resources.

High technology in the field of banking and financial services and products.

Implementation of smart production and systems, additive technologies.

New Media, fashion, design, entertainment industry.

Solutions in the field of dual technologies, civil technologies that have perspectives in MIC.

Applications can be submitted for about half a year, till autumn. Right after it is finished, the projects pass through the distance expertise and selection to the acceleration program. Selection is quite strict — several hundreds of teams that will in the accelerator are selected from several thousands.

The acceleration program itself was held from February and lasted for about two months. It is arranged as online seminars and face-to-face programs.

During the acceleration program, the start-up teams get valuable knowledge at the lectures, trainings and master-classes, visit partner track productions, pass through international internship, visit industry-specific events. Mentors help start-ups to finalize the product and develop technologies, lead the idea to the market.

35 start-ups get to the federal final in 2018. Jury will select three winners that will share a prize of 16 million roubles. The rest of finalists will not go away without prizes — they can count on bonuses from the partners, will get opportunity to enter into long-term contracts with them. This year, accelerator partners are Microsoft, Faberlic, СТС, Media Vympelkom, UEC Saturn, Voentelecom, Roselectronica, Aviation comple named after S.V. Ilushin, RT-Business development, Krastsvetmet and R&D Park, SC EFCO, SC NMGK, OC RUSAL, PJSC Gazprom Neft and others.

On April 27, at the final in Moscow, seven finalists — one from each track - will present their developments.

How GenerationS developed?

B 2017, RVC monitored start-ups participating in GenerationS and found out that total volume of investments in the accelerator graduates was 2.39 billion roubles.

70% start-ups receive revenue after they graduate from the acceleration program

27% companies that passed through GenerationS received private investments and State investments

25 start-ups after graduation from GenerationS became participants of the international acceleration programs.

73 start-ups successfully carry out international expansion.

Analysis includes estimation of development of about 270 start-ups that participated in the accelerator in different periods.

GenerationS was the first in Russia in many things.

2003-2012 It was a competition for business plans.

2013 The program obtained current features and re-formatted to the first business accelerator of the federal level. Exactly at that moment, the participants started to pass through the training related to technological entrepreneurship under leadership of mentors.

In 2014, GenerationS got industry specialization and the program became the first multi-industry accelerator in Russia and one the first — in Europe.

In 2015, a line of corporate accelerators appeared for the first time, big industry-specific companies became partners. Program participants got the opportunity to work directly with the representatives of enterprises.

2016-2017 GenerationS secured the name of the biggest platform that develops corporate acceleration. The largest companies and development institutions act as program partners every year.

2018 GenerationS will strengthen corporate orientation. Instead of the industry-specific tracks, the specialized corporate accelerators with individual selection criteria and start-up development programs will begin their work.

Who won in GenerationS?

Every year, the most interesting viable and competitive projects get to the accelerator final. They reflect and partially form tendencies of the Russian technology market. Considering these start-ups, one can judge the most perspective industries and directions of venture investment. It happened in this way at the previous accelerators: start-ups in creative field, agriculture, software and robotics won in them.

Aleksandr Khanin
Founder of VisionLabs
The most important thing is that we, at VisionLabs, could structure our knowledge and receive valuable remarks from the experts. The main thing in which such project assist with is adding structure to the business; teach basics of its organization. In order to participate in the accelerator it is important to clearly describe the essence of your business: the problem that it addresses, target market and customer, monetization model and to describe why your project will be of interest to the potential investors.

Today, VisionLabs's investors and customers are such companies as Sberbank, Tinkoff Bank, Pochta Bank, Sistema_VC (included in JSFC Sistema) and other.

One more project that won hearts of GenerationS jury is RCML universal language for industrial robots created by the developers from Perm Mikhail Tulkin and Dmitry Sutormin. RCML language (Robot Control Meta Language) makes possible "communication" of the industrial robots produced by different vendors. Currently, the language is adopted to the machines of the largest manufacturers — KUKA, FANUC, ABB, YASKAWA and others. The universal language by Perm programmers makes it possible to establish interaction between the robots to solve the definite tasks. In perspective, development will allow the significant extension of the application field of the industrial robots at the Russian production enterprises.

Mikhail Tyulkin
Founder of Robot Control Meta Language
We wanted to create a universal solution for all types of robots without any exceptions. Thus, in 2014, there happened a creative R&D and we started development. However, from autumn of 2015, we understood that we need to narrow down the direction and focus on the industrial sector of robotics. We gave shape to this idea: from software components architecture to integration into existing solutions ecosystem in the industrial robotics — the first MVP.

RCML start-up during its participation in the accelerator:

attracted 500 thousand angel investments and is getting ready to the next round for about 2 million Euro; was included in the "Plant of future" of the NTI TechNet task force implemented together with the UEC Saturn; received from the accelerator partner — Microsoft Corp. — grant to use the cloud platform Microsoft Azure for the amount of $120 thousand; received from GenerationS 4.9 million roubles, that it plans to spend for further research and development of the main product.

Mikhail Tyulkin and Dmitry Sutormin are further intended to create the complete store like Google Play, where they will sell ready algorithms for industrial roots.

In 2016, one of GenerationS winners was a start-up from Kuban — a vendor of bio-fungicides "Green technology manufacture”, which received 5 million roubles. A team managed by Angela Asaturova works in the industry difficult for the start-ups — agriculture, where investments in new technologies are of high risk and ROI is quite long-term.

Start-up idea is to develop and produce biological plant-protecting agents instead of chemical. With the use of genetics technologies, the special bacteria strains that are killing for the pests, depredators and diseases, but don't affect useful plants — cereals, oil family, feed crops, fruit and vegetable plants. Bio-fungicides affect a wide range of pests and diseases and doesn't influence seeds and plants. These preparations cannot make any harm to the environment, agricultural animals or humans by definition.

"Use of biotechnological preparations instead of chemical pesticides makes it possible to increase performance and decrease expenses of the manufacturers for plants protection and doesn't affect the environment"

This year, GenerationS final will be held on April 27 at Tesla Place in Moscow.

Organizers promise technological show that became traditional, which culmination will be announcement of the winners. Judging by the finals of previous years, it is almost impossible to name the favourites beforehand or even to determine the industries where they work.

You can learn more about the future of technologies and personally meet with the most vivid entrepreneurs at GenerationS final on April 27.
