Augmented and Virtual Reality (AR & VR) will become a new preferred direction of the National Technology Initiative (NTI), defined by the president as the foundation of the innovative development of the country. The interdepartmental expert council now conducts the development of the AR & VR “road map”; its adoption is expected next year.
According to the head of Russian Venture Company (RVC) Evgeniy Kuznetsov, AR & VR will become one of the promising directions of the NTI development.
The head of the Association of augmented and virtual reality Ekaterina Filatova told Izvestia that in the draft of the AR & VR "road map" such areas of industry as medical and communicational platforms, means of creating a virtual image, development tools, and augmented reality have been designated.
According to Ekaterina Filatova, the AR & VR "road map" will take into account the areas such as the appearance and functional development of virtual images — avatars. Over time, your image on the page in a social network will be able to not only help those around to identify you: in the future, virtual assistants will be able to communicate on your behalf with the visitors, and if you bestow such opportunities on them, to give certain information on your behalf.
Russia has already implemented large-scale professional projects in the field of AR & VR. For example, in the Energia Rocket and Space Corporation, a system of virtual reality with a full immersion to simulate extravehicular activity is being created. The new method of training will partly replace the testing of manipulation in the famous pool at the Cosmonaut Training Centre (CTC), in which a copy of the Russian segment of the ISS is placed.
For RSC Energia a complex biomechanical model of the human kinematics is being created, for those operating in a spacesuit, taking into account the difference between the pressure of the external environment and pressure inside the spacesuit. In the virtual kinematic model, all the constraints that arise from a person moving in a spacesuit are taken into account. To add to this, a system allowing to "turn off" gravity is being created, creating complete illusion of weightlessness in astronauts.
According to Ekaterina Filatova, the "road map" can be prepared in the coming months and after the approval of the Agency for Strategic Initiatives will be presented for consideration to RVC.
Today, the Presidential Council for economic modernization and innovative development of the following approved "road maps" of NTI: EnergyNet (distributed power from the personal power to the smart grid, smart city), AeroNet (distributed systems of unmanned aerial vehicles), MariNet (distributed systems of maritime transport without crew), AutoNet (distributed road network management without a driver), NeuroNet (distributed artificial ingredients of consciousness and psyche). At the stage of development and approval, there are "road maps" FinNet (decentralized financial systems and currencies), FoodNet (personal system of production and delivery of food and water), SafeNet (new personal security) and HealthNet (personalized medicine).
Vladimir Putin described the main idea of NTI in his annual Address to the Federal Assembly on 4 December 2014: "On the basis of long-term forecasting, it is necessary to understand what challenges Russia will face in 10-15 years, which innovative solutions will require in order to ensure national security, people's quality of life, development of the sectors of the new technological order." In the presidential decree "On the Strategy of Scientific and Technological Development of the Russian Federation" (dated 01.12.2016), the NTI was called "one of the main instruments ensuring the transformation of fundamental knowledge, research and applied research into products and services that contribute to the Russian leadership in the promising markets".
