The Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Medvedev, signed Resolution No. 538 of April 30, 2019 “About Measures of State Support for the Establishment and Development of World-Class Scientific Centers”.
According to the document, in 2019 and 2020, the state will allocate grants from the budget in the form of grants for the creation and development of 3 Genomic Research Centers of international level.
The centers are being set up to “carry out breakthrough genomic research and development of genetic technologies, including technologies of genetic editing”.
The selection of organizations on the basis of which Genomic Research Centers will be established, will be held by the Council for the implementation of the Federal Scientific and Technical Program for the Development of Genetic Technologies for 2019 2017. The Council was formed by Decree of the President of the Russian Federation since November 28, 2018 No. 680 “About the Development of Genetic Technologies in the Russian Federation”.
The list of organizations on the basis of which Genomic Centers will be arranged, and the size of grants will be approved by the Government of the Russian Federation.
According to Artur Isayev, Director of the Genetico Center, the leader of the Medical Genetics segment of the National Technological Initiative: “Financing fundamental and exploratory research in the area of genomic technologies is the beginning of good practice, and in the trend of what is happening in the world. We, as one of the active players in the commercialization and implementation of genomic technologies in practical health care, are interested in the emergence of fundamental Russian research and development of good quality”.
